Preparation Isn't The Variable

Here's what nobody tells you about presenting: the preparation was never the hard part. You can rehearse an opening forty times and still feel it slip the moment you stand up — because what changes when you stand up isn't your knowledge. It's your physiology.

Your autonomic nervous system runs one program for high-stakes situations, and it was written long before boardrooms. Adrenaline releases. Heart rate climbs. You feel ready to move fast, which is inconvenient when the job is to stand still and explain a spreadsheet.

You can know the breathing exercises and still wish you'd skipped the large coffee in the lobby. You prepared the material. Wanting to prepare for the moment itself makes sense too.
